the “what the fuck is poetry?” poetry workshop was first conceived of in 2018. since then, it has been taught in three cities, both online and in person, and across the span of four years.

the primary focus of the workshop is to help people become better poets, although it looks different from week to week. the most urgent task that the workshop seeks to accomplish, in service of making its attendees better writers, is to help students to develop healthier relationships with their creativity and to build healthier, more sustainable artistic habits and practices.

we believe firmly in the role of collaboration and intentionality in making better artists, and also in the role of undoing the emotional and psychic damage done to all of us by growing up in the society we grew up in. all humans possess innate creativity, and this truth has been robbed from us. art is packaged and sold back to us as something we must consume, instead of as the participatory, open-ended, and mystical process it truly is. we believe that all people deserve to have a relationship with their creativity and to have the space and time to explore what their creativity wants, how to heal the old wounds of their childhood art-making, and the ways in which they can build a creative life. art is for the people, not just the select few chosen ones. whether you identify as an artist or not, whether your creative paths were chosen or snatched away from you as a child when you reached the age where creativity stopped being allowed and fun and instead became about being good, the workshop welcomes you and holds a space for you to explore what’s inside of you.

the workshop is not limited to only poets; students span across the range of all mediums from songwriters to graphic designers to light-display artists.
